December 1, 2015:  Write Unit 4 reflection.  Turn in Unit 4 Folder.  Review Unit 5 Prompt.  Unit 5 Essay and Portfolio due  December 10, 2015.  Read for next class:  Norton Chapter 18 "Reflections" and Chapter 29 "Compiling a Portfolio."

November 22, 2015:  Peer Review

November 17, 2015:  Discuss Works Cited and Hand-Out for Easy Bib, as well as an example of a Unit 4 paper.

November 11, 2015:  Discuss Thesis Statements, Topic Sentences and Contrast/Compare.  For next class, write your introduction, assemble your five summaries together (if you are going to use them) using transitions in between, and write three synthesis paragraphs following your summaries.

November 9, 2015:  Group workshops.  For next class:  Finish synthesis charts and all five summaries must be ready.

November 4, 2015:  Review PowerPoint on Synthesis and class handout.  Hand out Synthesis Chart.  Assignment:  Read the four remaining chapters recommended on syllabus (43-45), and write two more summaries.  In Class:  Group Workshop

November 2, 2015:  Write Reflection for Unit 3. Discuss Unit 4 Prompt.  Review handouts.  Discuss Blog opportunities.  For next class, you must have completed two summaries of articles out of Culture.  Remember, choosing articles out of the same section of the book is likely to make your final paper easier, as your task is to synthesize five articles together, comparing and contrasting their views on the culture of __________________.   Read Chapter 46 out of the Norton book.

October 27, 2015:  Workshop:  Turning Summary into analysis, Using quotes. Next class:  Peer review.  Also,  Read Unit 4 Prompt.  For Next class, November 3, Read the Unit 4 Prompt; Read another article from the group of articles from which you chose for Unit 3 and write a summary of it.

October 25, 2015:  Salt Worksheet

October 22, 2015:  Class Workshop using Worksheet. Reread articles of your peer for next class.  Write three analysis paragraphs for next class.

October 15, 2015:  Review: Readings on Angle of Vision; Critique "Why We Crave Horror Stories"; Write U.R. Riddle Letters.  For next class, Reading Assignment:  "30 Little Turtles" by Thomas L. Friedman and "Questioning Thomas L. Friedman's Optimism in "30 Little Turtles" by Stephanie Malinowski (handouts). Writing Assignment:  Draft 1 1/2 pages of analysis of your article.

October 8, 2015:  Review class readings.  In class workshops.    Holiday Weekend.

October 6, 2015:  In Class:  Discuss readings.  In class group workshops critiquing various pieces of writing.
Continue working on Unit 2 rewrites.  Reading for next class:  Review readings due last class.  Continue to work on Unit 2 revisions.  Complete worksheet.

For Next Class:  Unit 2 Folder Due.  Unit 2 paper must be sent by email to marshalgriffiths@siu.edu and uploaded to D2L.

September 24, 2015:  In Class:  Discuss readings.  In class group workshops on developing our advertisement analysis. Writing for next class: Completed Draft for Peer Review bring two copies to the next class. Reading for Next Class:  Unit 3 Prompt

September 22, 2015 In Class:  Freewrite (2):  (1)The difficulty of class writing assignments. (2)What is the argument that your advertisement is trying to make?  How is the advertiser trying to make that argument?  Discuss readings.  Class Activity:  Drawing Each Other's Advertisement. Reading for Next Class:  (1) Culture, "Sorting Out Santa," p. 74 Writing Assignment:  Write two pages, arguing that the advertiser of your advertisement was either successful or unsuccessful in persuading its audience to "buy" what is being sold.
